First Cheer Competition? Here's What You Actually Need to Pack 🎀
Your athlete's first cheer competition is exciting — but packing for it can feel a little overwhelming.
If you've been reading cheer mom groups, you've probably seen everything from giant rolling bags to emergency kits that look like they could handle a small disaster. 😅
The good news?
You probably don't need to pack your whole house.
Here's a simple checklist to help first-time cheer parents get started.

🎀 The Must-Haves
These are the things you really don't want to forget:
Competition uniform
Cheer shoes
Bow
Required makeup
Hair products
Water bottle
Easy snacks
Before leaving home, double-check that every part of the uniform is actually in the bag. Shoes and bows are especially easy to leave behind on a busy competition morning.

✨ Nice to Have
These aren't always necessary, but they can make competition day much easier:
Extra socks or tights
Bobby pins and hair ties
Small hairspray
Makeup for touch-ups
Warm-up jacket
Change of clothes
Portable phone charger
Small first-aid kit
Plastic or zip bags for organizing small items
A few small backup items can save a lot of stress without filling an entire suitcase.

👜 Do You Need a Huge Cheer Bag?
Not necessarily.
Some experienced cheer families love large rolling bags because they attend long competitions, travel frequently, or have multiple athletes.
Others have competed for years using nothing more than a cheer backpack and a garment bag.
There's no “correct” bag.
Bring what works for your athlete, your gym, and your competition schedule.

💡 A Few Competition-Day Tips
Pack the night before.
Competition mornings are already busy enough.
Keep everything together.
Hair accessories, makeup and small items are much easier to find when they’re separated into small pouches.
Label your athlete's belongings.
At a cheer competition, there may be hundreds of identical shoes, bows, jackets and bags.
Ask your gym first.
Every program has slightly different expectations, so your coach's checklist should always come first.
And most importantly:
Don’t stress about having everything another cheer mom has.
After a few competitions, you'll quickly figure out what your family actually uses — and what stays in the bag all season.
